How to Use a Vinyl Cutting Machine

time2011/01/22

Using a vinyl cutter is similar to using a computer printer, in that the design is created and formatted on the computer, and sent to the cutter for processing. Vinyl cutters are print plotters, modified with a swivel knife instead of a pen or cartridge, and tensioned vinyl holding and feeding mechanism. The lettering or design is created using integrated sign graphic and cutting software on a computer, which processes the design and formats to communicate with the cutter.
Instructions
Loosen the tension roller by flipping the locking mechanisms to the "up" position. The tension rollers are located on the cutter's top rail.
Adjust the side guide 2 or 3 inches wider than the vinyl's width, on the opposite side of the fixed edge of the cutter. The guide will have a spring-clip or thumb-screw retainer.
Load the leading edge of the vinyl sheet or roll onto the cutting bed, aligning the edge to the front guide mark, with one side against the cutter's fixed edge.
Move the side guide to the free-edge of the vinyl, making light contact, ensuring that the guide does not buckle the vinyl.
Adjust the tension rollers, evenly spaced over the width of the vinyl. Flip the locking mechanism to the "down" position.
Adjust the blade pressure by turning the adjustment knob on the blade housing. The blade must penetrate the vinyl, without cutting through the backing sheet. Some plotters have a pressure setting or blade function button on the cutter control panel.
Send the computer file to the cutter by pressing the "print" or "cut" button on the job software screen. The cutter will perform a series of self-diagnostic functions, and proceed with the cutting job.
Cut the finished vinyl sheet from the machine by pressing the "cut" or "trim" button on the cutter's control panel.
